Let’s make a…

Tallit Kattan

Something about how I got started making a tallit kattan and what they are

What you'll need:

A tank top or undershirt

4.5 inch square pieces of lightweight fabric x4 (one for each corner)

Set of Tzittzit

Embroidery thread

Scissors

Sewing Machine (serger/overlocker can be handy)

Step 1:

Cut halfway up the side seams on both sides of the shirt.

Serge the edges, being careful when pivoting at the top or use your preferred way to finish seams

Step 2:

Fold over the newly serged edges and sew them down.

*You could maybe skip both these steps with fabric that doesn’t fray or use bias binding instead.

Step 3:

Technically this step is optional, but gives the garment more structure and perhaps more recognizability as a tallit kattan.

Fold back all the edges on your four squares about 1/4”*

Pin each square to the outside of the corners of the shirt

Sew around the square, pivoting at the corners.

*It may be easier to iron or baste stitch the edges of the square

Step 4:

Punch a hole in the center of each of the four squares. Scissors or an awl work well for this.

Using your embroidery thread, reinforce the edges of the hole you just made.

Step 5:

Tie the tzittzit to the four corners to finish your tallit kattan
